Jonathan Guy Lewis
Jonathan originally trained as an actor at the Guildhall school of Music and Drama. Whilst there he adapted and directed the highly acclaimed one man musical, ‘Skylark’ which he subsequently directed for the National Student Theatre Company. After leaving drama school, he had spells at a number of Repertory Theatres , including Harrogate, Leeds, Colchester, York and then went on to the National Theatre. His theatre credits include ‘Peer Gynt’, ‘She Stoops to Conquer’, ‘London Assurance’, ‘Colours’, ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’, ‘How the Other Half Loves’, and Stephen Daldry’s production of ‘An Inspector Calls’ at The Aldwych Theatre in the West End. He appeared at Derby Playhouse and the Hampstead Theatre in the European premiere of the award-winning Australian play ‘Speaking in Tongues’, and most recently as Jimmy in a No. 1 tour of ‘The Gingerbread Lady’ and continuing the Australian theme, he took the lead role in ‘Myth, Propaganda and Disaster in Nazi Germany and Contemporary America’ by award-winning Australian playwright Stephen Sewell at The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond.
His regular television roles made him a familiar face on the small screen. They included Sgt. Chris McCleod in Soldier, Soldier and Station Officer Chris Hammond in London’s Burning. And whilst starring in Coronation Street as Ian Bentley, over twenty million viewers tuned in to watch bride-to-be Sharon’s attack on Ian at the altar. Soon he will be seen as Ray Winstone’s brother-in-law in Ray’s new and yet to be released private detective series for Granada called ‘Vincent’. Other television credits include Sea of Souls, Holby City, Heartbeat, Inspector Morse, Peak Practice, The Governor, Casualty and many more.
Jonathan is also known now as a director and a writer. His first play, which he also directed, ‘ Our Boys’ won a Writers’ Guild Award for Best New Fringe Play and he was nominated for the Lloyds Bank Playwright of the Year, as well as winning the TAPS New Writer of the Year. The acting company also took the Best Acting Ensemble at the London Fringe Awards. He has also directed David Williamson’s award winning play ‘The Club’, and most recently he has written and directed ‘A Comedy of Arias’ at the Pleasance in Edinburgh and The New Ambassadors in the West End, as well as a play called ‘The Pitch’ which was developed in conjunction with the Soho Theatre and Tequilla/London set in the world of branding and advertising. He has directed at The Donmar Warehouse, The National Theatre Studio, as well as Derby Playhouse, Soho Poly, The Old Red Lion, The Northcott and the Taliasin in Swansea. His writing credits for Television have included episodic dramas for Carlton, LWT and Pearson and the BBC.
