Desert Crossings
A unique international dance theatre collaboration, which has been performed all over the world, from State Of Emergency and acclaimed South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma – whose work has been described as ‘the most cutting edge contemporary work to emerge from Africa’.
Five stunning dancers immerse themselves in contemporary African movement inspired by the beauty of coastlines and landscapes, creating a choreographic journey across vast deserts, seas and mountains, with an original score by Grammy nominated composer Steve Marshall. A premiere production from one of the most exciting Black dance companies in the UK.
"The choreography resonates with ancient traditions, belief systems and mythologies emanating from mosques, churches and ancient caves from the origins of mankind to Timbuktu, and beyond the Jurassic Coast… The memory of time is broken by individual outbursts and muscular vocabulary which turns human flesh into tumbleweeds or fossils of primordial memory, creating a journey across vast deserts, seas and mountains. Desert Crossings is a landscape where the physical and the metaphysical, the corporeal and the spiritual, the celestial and terrestrial all merge." Gregory Maqoma
Desert Crossings is a collaboration between State of Emergency, Gregory Maqoma and is supported by Arts Council England and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Team.
